Ahhh Fad diets...the paleo diet, the atkins diet, the keto diet, the vegan diet, and vegetarian diet.
They come into our lives accompanied by models with rock hard cores claiming that they are the best way to release those sexy muscles under our “nature’s layer of insulation”. And we dive head first into the commitment of sticking to the stringent rules of each diet. We lose 5...maybe 10 pounds. And then things just, kind of...get stuck. We stay true to our commitment. After all, we’ve already come this far. But a few more weeks pass by, and nothing changes. That diet didn’t work. We guess that diet is just not meant for us...perhaps our body types are just not meant to be lean.
STOP RIGHT THERE!
There is nothing wrong with your body. Yes, there are people with different body types. Yes, it’s easier for some to lose weight, and yes it’s hard as heck for others to add even a tiny bit of muscle. But everyone is physically capable of achieving their goals.
So what’s the problem?
Every single FAD diet fails to teach one underlying law of the human body...thermodynamics. Ya, that’s a big word. Let me make it super, super simple. If your body burns more calories than you consume, you lose weight. If your body burns less calories than you consume, you gain weight. So if you eat no carbs, no fats, no protein, no animals, no fruits, no refined sugars, or absolutely anything else, the underlying law stays the same. If you eat more than you burn, you gain.
Don’t get me wrong. Fad diets do have a place. They are the extreme strategies to losing weight. But they are the absolute last resort...the last card any nutritionist with half a decent understanding of body composition should offer you.
I LOVE Analogies...So let me explain in an illustrative way
Dieting is kind of like driving a car. And Fad diets are the exotic supercars. They are sexy, they are flashy, you can tell everyone you own one and everyone praises you for it. BUT, what good is a supercar when you don’t know how to drive. Of course, as a driver, you want to get from point A to point B.
Now, if you don’t understand the rules of the road, and have no experience driving, why on earth would you choose a supercar to take you from point A to point B?! You might get lucky and cover some distance, but eventually you will crash.
So what do you do? Well, you have three options. You can study by yourself, with books. But eventually you will need to pay someone to teach you how to drive, in their very own car. This person’s car is one that they bought and take care of. They know this car very well. And different instructors have different cars. Some are faster than others, others are more reliable. All of which will eventually teach you how to get from point A to B. You can follow one instructor, or hire a few and get a well rounded perspective. But you eventually start understanding the different concepts yourself. This is equivalent to taking a nutrition course. It’s a large investment and requires work from your end.
OR...if you have the money, you hire a chauffeur to drive you around everywhere. You pay more, but the chauffeur takes all the thinking out of the equation. You get from point A to point B every time and the driver is a professional at what they do. Just to be clear, this is like hiring an in person, personal trainer; someone who holds your hand through the entire workout and does the planning for you.
As for my services, well I guess I am like the part time chauffeur. I don’t break your wallet with my online services, I take the thinking out of it for you, but I am not there for you 24/7. I am a little more like an Uber. You can always reach me when you want to get from point A to point B and I can do that in whatever car suits you best.
So there you have it! Now you know why Fad diets are a critical mistake. Now you know the main principle of dieting (calories burned vs. weight stored/lost) and you know your options.
